Humble Beginnings about Humble Beginnings: Launching of A Settler’s Passion
Well, it’s really happening! My first novel is finally hitting bookstore shelves (and your favorite online bookseller websites.) I couldn’t be more excited. It’s been a long process but I’m thrilled for you to get a chance to read it. And since I’ve gotten tons of questions from folks who have learned I’ve been writing, I thought this would be a good time to answer a couple.
Why Write?
One of the frequent questions has been: What made you want to write a book in the first place? Good question! I truly believe everyone has a story or two rattling around in the back of their minds. However, embarking on the journey of writing hundreds of pages, sending it out to multiple publishers, and anxiously waiting to hear if someone — anyone — thinks it has merit is a different prospect. Sometimes, I still wonder how I did it. And while I’d like to say I always wanted to be a writer, I can’t. I actually started writing because I witnessed the passion of a master storyteller, thus I wanted to give it a try for myself.
I fell into the publishing/book world while serving as the Executive Director for the Center for the Book, a position I held concurrently with Director of Education at the Library of Virginia. I was lucky enough to work with New York Times best-selling author David Baldacci, who was on the Center’s Board of Directors. After working together for years, I came to accept a position with David’s company, Columbus Rose, Ltd. where I served as his assistant for over a decade. Working for one of the most amazing and prolific writers of our time cemented in me the joy of storytelling. Watching him agonize over the smallest detail — wanting to ensure the book was the best it could be — taught me the level of dedication and care necessary to take on writing A Settler’s Passion.
Why Write about Jamestown?
Another question I’m often asked: Why Jamestown? It’s simple. I fell in love with the time, place, and people who established the Virginia Colony. Most know the basics about Jamestown: three ships landing along the James River, conflict between the colonists and the natives, etc. But they know little about the people (except maybe Captain John Smith or Pocahontas.) I’ve always been fascinated by those who dared to take on such a dangerous journey. What made them risk so much for so little? It’s not like 1611 Jamestown was a resort spa. It was a crude outpost with never-ending danger. It was a place where life was excruciatingly difficult for those few who survived its brutal conditions. Thus I knew, especially after reading through the research, this was a place where hundreds of stories were just waiting to be told.
Thus, the Jamestowne Chronicles was born!!! While the history of this place and time could fill numerous volumes, right now I have three in mind. Book One: A Settlers Passion (August 18, 2023), followed by A Settler’s Pride (Coming sometime in 2024/2025), and finally, A Settler’s Promise (release date TBA).
Enjoy traveling back to the early days of the beginnings of a nation at Jamestown.
